Executive Chairman Chris Mooney extended an invitation to attend a Boardroom Lunch with the Honourable Judge Amul Thapar, held at Dentons, the world’s largest law firm, in their Melbourne office. This event provided a unique opportunity to hear from Judge Amul Thapar, who serves on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, having been appointed in 2017 as President Trump’s first appellate nominee and the first South Asian Article III judge.
During the lunch, Judge Amul Thapar shared his inspiring journey, reflecting on his upbringing as the child of immigrant parents in America. He spoke candidly about the challenges he faced, emphasizing the crucial role that a strong work ethic and the belief in the power of hard work played in his path to success.
Judge Amul Thapar also delved into the significance of understanding the difference between rules and standards, and the importance of establishing effective processes. These principles, he noted, are vital not only in the legal realm but also in the business world. Judge Amul Thapar expressed the opinion that all judges should be placed on time limits for the outcomes of their cases—a sentiment that was met with agreement from the many lawyers present in the room.

One of the most poignant moments came when Judge Thapar spoke about the privilege of swearing in new citizens to America, which he described as one of the most rewarding aspects of his role.
The lunch also provided ample opportunities to engage with Judge Thapar on how his personal values and experiences outside the courtroom have shaped his career. His reflections on his modest beginnings and the importance of staying grounded resonated deeply. The judge’s message about remembering one’s roots and how it informs one's perspective was both impactful and inspiring.
Prior to the lunch, a select number of AICC members and VIPs welcomed Judge Amul Thapar onto the hallowed ground of the MCG, where he joked that he was "pleased that the American Catholic preacher, Billy Graham, had attracted more attendees than Taylor Swift."
