The Australia India of Chamber (AICC) had the opportunity to meet the new India's High Commissioner to Australia, His Excellency Gopal Baglay. The event was held at an exclusive Business Leaders Roundtable at the Victorian Investment Centre. Mr Baglay succeeds former Ambassador Manpreet Vohra.
His Excellency brings a rich background of experience and expertise to his new role. He holds a Master's degree in chemistry from Lucknow University. He is also proficient in multiple languages, including Hindi, Urdu, Sanskrit, English, Ukrainian, Russian, and Nepali.
Mr Baglay served as spokesperson and Joint Secretary for Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Iran in the Ministry of External Affairs. Later, he became Joint Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office before becoming the High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka in May 2020.
As the current High Commissioner to Australia, Mr Baglay aims to strengthen India’s diplomatic ties with the Pacific nation. India and Australia share a robust strategic partnership, collaborating in defence, trade, and regional stability.
The Round Table included the Australia India Chamber of Commerce leadership team, consisting of Chris Mooney, Executive Chair, Director Harish Rao, former Premier and Patron of the AICC, The Hon Ted Baillieu AO, as well as Associate Professsor Mohan Yellishetty, Convenor of the AICC's Critical Minerals National Industry Group.
